The Value of Wing Tsun in Your Life

To know the value of Wing Tsun, it may help to know how Wing Tsun developed and for what purpose.

Before we begin, Wing Tsun focuses on close distance defense, the shortest distance for attack and defense, softer, more flexible upper body, defenses, low kicking, and training to use an attacker’s force instead of clashing with a stronger, bigger attacker. It’s not fancy, just effective.

Among the very many martial arts styles and systems created in years gone by in the eastern countries of China, Japan, Korea, and others, Wing Tsun is unique.

Wing Tsun is the spelling used by Great Grandmaster Leung Ting to separate his system from the many who spell it as “Wing Chun.” Grandmaster Leung Ting first learned from Grandmaster’s first pupil, Leung Sheung. Later, he was introduced to the Grandmaster himself, Yip Man. He was Yip Man’s private student for a period before Yip Man passed away in 1972.

The art of Wing Tsun was supposedly descended from the famous monastery system of Shaolin. Shaolin had many sub systems of different characteristics. Legend says that Manchus from China’s north burned the Monastery to the ground. Some monks escaped. One of these was the woman Ng Mui. Ng Mui modified what she had learned to be more suitable for a weaker person. In those days, the arts were secret systems and there were no organized contests of fighting involving the secret arts of Shaolin. Ng Mui traveled and found a young teenager who was being bullied and took the teenager under her wing to teach her secret system. The teenager’s name was Yim Wing Tsun!

Through the generations, Wing Tsun was developed in more urban centers and so it took on the character of self-defense in crowded urban places, most recently Hong Kong. Still, some aspects of Shaolin kung-fu remain.

Wing Tsun today is a close-range system that is superb at close range which is a distance that is uncomfortable for many martial arts practitioners. This is because so many styles and systems are long range and so that is how they train. This is also the distance that is uncomfortable for many common street attackers. The so-called “one-inch-punch was made famous by Wing Tsun/wing chun. Wing Tsun also has a complete set of elbow techniques.

The beginner set of movements uses controlled breathing and very slow movements to train patience, precision and close-range power. These are all attributes that aid in health, leg strength, and help with your journey as a martial artist. Coordination and instant reactions at close distances also aid in the effectiveness of your defense should you be attacked. Your attacker has less time to get out of the way once you use your close-range defenses. In addition, defenses and offense occur at the SAME time in Wing Tsun. Realism is our forte. There is no time to block and then attack in a real situation.

The most famous training in Wing Tsun is sticky hands, also known as “chi sau.” Chi sau allows a defender to cling to an attacker’s arms, even for a nano-second so that his power, direction of movement, and even his apparent intent can aid in your defense! Other more obscure Chinese styles have used the idea of sticking but Wing Tsun (or wing chun) has advanced it to a high art.

Your serious efforts will pay off in flexible movement, better balance with superb footwork, joint maintenance, better posture, explosive power in kicks and hands, and better control of breathing. Become fearless!
