Elbows are powerful, close-range weapons for self-defense. In Wing Tsun, the correct weapon is based on the distance you are from your attacker. Wing Tsun concepts say that CLOSER IS BETTER. That is, getting close to your attack affords a better chance of hitting your target. In addition, you can generate more power when you are close to your attacker. The “clinging arms” practice that students and instructor practice affords a better “feel” for when a weapon, i.e. arms, legs, shoulders, knees, etc. can be used. Trying to hit with the elbows at a range suitable for kicks or punches is not the correct use of elbows in self-defense.
Elbows are presented in all these hand forms of Wing Tsun and demonstrate different applications. Elbows can be used from the front, sides, and rear.
