Master Z - The Ip Man Legacy - review

Master Z - The Ip Man Legacy Review:

I just saw Master Z, Ip Man Legacy starring Max Zhang and Michelle Yeoh. It is set in the same time period of the late 40s and early 50s, Hong Kong. I really enjoyed this movie. The character from Ip Man 3, Cheung Tin Chi, who fought Ip Man is back in this movie. It is played well by Max Zhang. Cheung Tin Chi ostensibly left the martial arts world only to become involved in combating a local drug syndicate. Michelle Yeoh who has had a more and more distinguished acting career in movies like Wing Chun, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Star Trek Discovery, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and now an Oscar winner, shows up in this movie as the head of the drug syndicate. She has an exciting fight sequence with Max Zhang and it is truly inspiring to see that she still has remarkable skills as a kung-fu movie fighter! The action director is Yuen Wo Ping. Yes, it is very high caliber.

Early on, Master Z shows us the background story of him and his son. It is done very well, at least as good as the background story in Ip Man 3 or better.

Early on the director sets up the character of Owen Davidson, the head of a drug syndicate and restaurant owner. It is played by Dave Bautista who also played the role of Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Tony Jaa makes a brief cameo appearance.

Although a bit formulaic, Master Z moves along at a refreshing pace, and just when you think its over, we have one more major scene at the end to resolve one more issue, that of the leader of a drug syndicate. It results in a fun last fight scene before the final scenes and credits. Five out of five stars.
