For those that wish to try different martial arts, if you decide to advance in another martial art, you may need to unlearn what you did before. Generic sparring using different martial arts is one thing but if you pursue a martial art as an art rather than just ring fighting, it is a different pursuit!
Learning a martial art as the art was intended requires more focus on technique and personal improvement than just getting in a ring and trying to win a match. The real battle is victory over oneself!
Having began martial arts in the Korean art of Tang Soo Do, I advanced to first degree black belt in Detroit, Michigan. In 1975, I moved to Phoenix, Arizona. An acquaintance introduced me to Wing Chun kung-fu. I spent 4 years with his instructor trying to get rid of the habits and rigidity of my previous training.
Politics intervened in 1979, but I loved the ideas of this martial art. I contacted somebody not involved in local politics and invited great Grandmaster Leung Ting to the U.S. His first tour can be described at length but to be brief, I became a student of his Wing Tsun system. I spent another several years unlearning the habits I picked up from Wing Chun to learn the Leung Ting system!
Yes, I have done this twice now so you can do it too!.
